Kaspersky internet security 2010 is slowing down my computer

It has significantly slowed down my web browsing and I have noticed that every time I change to a different site, Kaspersky intervenes and takes me to a Kaspersky site first. I was under the impression that KAV is a standalone app — that is, it makes decisions based on what I loaded originally, and uses the virus database to identify bad sites and scripts.
