Continued next week Growing up in the 40's, especially before TV, meant the week's best entertainment was the Saturday matinee at the downtown theatre: a western feature with Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Hopalong Cassidy or some other cowboy hero; 5 cartoons; a comedy short featuring the 3 Stooges, Edgar Kennedy or some other slapstick comedian; and, of course, another thrilling chapter of a serial--all of this for only 15 cents.
Though this is not the original Zorro, the hero of this piece, Jeff Stewart George Turner is a decendent and the story line is similar. Stewart is returning home after serving his country in the Civil War about , only to find while he and the other able-bodied males were away, crooked politicians got themselves illegally elected and are abusing Box County citizens with their unfair taxes, high tolls, and acts of terrorism against any who dare resist.
Though initially trying to settle matters peacefully, Stewart is forced to assume the role of his ancestor to battle the evil that has disrupted his hometown. Kate becomes the perfect "Damsel in Distress", week after week getting knocked unconscious or tied up, only to be rescued by Zorro. Don't let anyone kid you, Peggy Stewart is an excellent horsewoman and did all of her stunt riding herself. She still rides today, even at 77, though she is retired from acting.
Was Barcroft the movies' all-time best bad guy or what. But, who was the real brains behind the gang? Well, you'll have to see chapter 13 to find out, though I'll tell you it's one you might least expect. Over 40 years after seeing "Son of Zorro" in the theatre, I have to admit I still loved it and found it just as exciting as it was when I was a kid. This was one of only four chapter serials to be released by Republic. Three of the four were released in , the only original serials released in that year.
The fourth serial of the year was a re-release of the chapter, serial Jungle Girl. This marked the first time Republic had re-released a serial to add to their first run serial releases. The special effects were created by the Lydecker brothers. Son of Zorro' s official release date is 18 January , although this is actually the date the sixth chapter was made available to film exchanges.
This was the first time Republic had re-released a serial. This was followed by the next new serial, Jesse James Rides Again. The last original Republic serial release had been King of the Carnival in In the early s, Son of Zorro was one of fourteen Republic serials edited into a television series. Republic, 13 Chapters, Stewart at first tries to unseat the politicos through purely legal methods, laying plans to build an alternate road that will provide a tax-free shipping route artery for the citizenry.
Above: Zorro on his first ride. To return to specifics, Son of Zorro is one of the best of the chapterplays from this often unheralded group, a solid Western enlivened by the masked-avenger gimmick, some clever bits of plotting, a good and good-sized cast, memorable opening-credits music, and a few unexpectedly humorous touches. Franklin Adreon, Basil Dickey, Jesse Duffy, and Sol Shor avoid excessive repetition in their script, focusing on the struggle over the new road for the first five chapters, then switching over to new plotlines involving a set of incriminating country records and then an application to the governor to create a body of state rangers, before finally setting the heroes directly on the trail of the mystery boss in the last three chapters.
Above: Peggy Stewart smiles and Ed Cassidy frowns as George Turner all three in shot at left gets the legal upper hand on Ernie Adams in right-hand shot. The lengthy nighttime chase and shootout in Chapter Eleven is also a highlight, as is the siege of the jail in Chapter Twelve.
Above: Zorro takes cover by the endangered powder wagon left as Roy Barcroft and Al Ferguson blaze away at him right during the big Chapter One shootout. Above left: A giant millstone advances towards the unconscious Peggy Stewart. The perkily beautiful Peggy Stewart has easily her best serial role in Son of Zorro , showing off her riding skills on several occasions and getting almost as much screen time as Turner himself the cliffhanger endings seem deliberately structured to alternately showcase her and her leading man.
Above: Peggy Stewart and George Turner. Roy Barcroft, Ernie Adams, and Ed Cassidy serve as a very entertaining and somewhat offbeat villainous triumvirate. Barcroft is as excellent as always as Boyd, sneering and snarling his way through the role with all his accustomed zest and managing to come off as both a seasoned roughneck and a crafty schemer. Perennial B-western lawman Cassidy, in one of his few villainous roles, is also very good as the nasty, blustering, and somewhat thick-witted Sheriff.
